Grumman A-6A Golden Intruder

This is a special project originally done as a gift to our neighbor in honor of his father, who flew Intruders during Vietnam. He has a photo of his father flying in a formation over the bridge at Deception Pass while he was assigned to the VA-128 Golden Intruders so that is what I wanted to depict for the project. The plane was first based on an A-6E that I photographed on the deck of the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point (Charleston, SC). After getting the basics of the artwork completed, I turned to several Intruder experts who helped me backdate the A-6E in my reference photos to a proper A-6A. This involved modifying scoops, antenna placement, wing root lines, and a lot more.

Just a few of the special points of interest include the detailed landing gear, rippled metal exhaust shielding, cockpit and the superdetailed wingfold mechanics. Look closely at the slideshow below and you’ll see even more to appreciate.

This beautiful high-quality giclee print is mounted in a custom 10×25 matte black metal frame protected behind non-glare acrylic and acid-free foam board backing .
